Final Game and Presentation

So today we finally got our game finished by adding the preloader into it. The preloader took alot of time to do because the code from the wiki wasn't wanting to work with the code that's in our game. So I started looking around the internet for preloader code that would work in our game. Then last week I found some that works and our game was then finished. Today we did our presentation for our final game. It smoothly and i'm glad that is over with now. Well this will most likely be my last post ever, it has been a new experience for me because I have never blogged before until I started the gaming program here at MCTC.

Artificial Intelligence

Today we learned a little about AI. The demo we did was making an object follow your mouse around until it caught it. It was fun to play around with the speed the object went while chasing the mouse. I was able to make it look like that it was stuck to the mouse it was going so fast. Although we will not be using it in our game. We may change our mind later on if we have time to put it into the game. That's all for now.

Running and Jumping

We have no need to run and jump in our game. With just few more little changes to our game it will be finished. We need to put the code back into it and add sound and thats it. I don't know what else to say on this, so i'm just going to type and take up space. Well that is all I have to say now so bye bye.

Finding Solutions

When we did finding solutions we looked at different websites on how to debug our game. The wiki gave us some websites to go to as well as some tips to make it easier for us to debug. It also listed some books that deals with this as well (I didnt look at those though). It is always nice to learn how to debug your game in an easier way if you can.

Sound Effects

Also today we learned how to put sound into our game. Although we already had sound to begin with, we will probably add some more sound to it. When you are playing the game we might have some space sounds playing in the background to make it more entertaining.

Timer

Today we tried to learn how to make a timer but it didnt work out so well. The timer wouldn't count and stay at zero the whole time. I don't think that we will use a timer in our game because the game is hard enough has it is.

Preloader

The other day we learned how to use the preloader, but the one we were supposed to edit wasn't working. It would load but there would only be a red screen. In the directions the next screen is supposed to show a dog. We are thinking about using a preloader in our game. With the preloader we might have comets shooting across the screen while it loads.

Collision Detection

Today we did a tutorial on collision detection. It was simple and I already knew how to do the dection. I do know that we have collision detection in our game. When the rocket girl would hit a planet you either won or had to start over. Also when you hit a planet you will get a fact about that planet.

Score Keeping

The other day in class we covered the topic on score keeping. It did not take long to do it and was pretty simple compared to some of the other stuff we are learning. Unlike the motion paths, I don't think that score keeping will be part of our game that we making. For one thing I wouldn't know how to incorporate it into the game because we don't have anything you get points for. The only thing we could use it for is to count how many planets you get hit by while playing the game. While playing the game you can get hit a lot if your not carefull.

Special Effects

Today I learned how to make special effects in Flash. I tought it was pretty neat and that we will use special effects in our final game. For the title of the game JJ wants to have it blur in and out. Then at the end I would like to have the letters to explode when they appeared.

Testing and Debugging

I have never had to use tracing to test and debug my game before. But after doing the assignment on the wiki. I can see that it can be very helpful for debugging games. When you see that the trace phrase comes up you know that it is working.

Scrolling Background

Today we learnt how to do a scrolling background. With the scrolling background I don't know if we will use it in a our game or not. I have to talk to my partner and see what he says about it being part of our game. I think that we should have some stars move around while the game is playing to give it some more visual aspects to it.

Motion Path

After learning about motion paths I believe that it could help in out game that we are working on. With that instead of coding the planets to move, we can just put them on a motion path to make them move. I still need to talk about this with my partner, but I think that it will help us progress on our game and in gaming II. If it works and we go with it, it will save us alot of headaches with the crappy code making the planets move that we have now.

Navigating the Time Line

Today we learned more about the time line and how to navigate through it. Afterwards I opened up the game we were working on in gaming II and saw that it was done on one layer. Also from gaming I another member of our team coded everything using math equations. With that coding we have no idea what it means, but without it nothing works. We have no idea on how to fix this problem, but me and my partner are trying everything we can think of to fix it. We hope to fix this problem soon, so we can continue to work on the game.

Scuba Diver of Death

This scuba diver assignment was terrible. When I went in to change the amount of fish and the time limit, I couldn't get it to play again. It turned out that I didn't have the buttons in with the download and that part of the code was missed up. The code that got messed up was that on line 91, I had to make the upper case R to a lower case r. That's all I have about that for now.

For Gaming 2 we are keeping the team page the same on the wiki. That will be good since we lost the two straglers from Gaming 1.
